Where: Seattle, Washington, USA
The Center for Orgonomic Studies offers a comprehensive 3-year training program in Wilhelm Reich's biophysical (body focused) approach to character restructuring for qualified mental health professionals. Training is conducted through a combination individual supervision and either semimonthly or long weekend didactic seminars. The semimonthly seminar program will begin in January, 1998, and is accepting applications at this time. The weekend seminar program will begin in Spring, 1999.
During the first year of training the basic theory and technique of orgone therapy will be presented and demonstrated. At mid year trainees will also begin to participate in twice monthly individual supervision using videotapes of their sessions. The second year of seminars will address in more depth both clinical theory and technique, as applied to the clinical work of the students and faculty. There will be extensive analysis of videotaped sessions. The third year will consist of ongoing individual supervision and case study seminars. Selected third year students will be invited to participate in the training of other therapists.

"The subject of 'sexuality' virtually cuts through all scientific fields of research. In the central phenomenon, the sexual orgasm, we meet with questions deriving from the field of psychology as well as from that of physiology, from the field of biology no less than from that of sociology. Natural science offers hardly another field of research that is so well equipped to exhibit the fundamental unity of everything that lives and to guard against narrow, fragmentizing specialization." -Wilhelm Reich
Reich himself has said that the rapid progression of his work from psychology to biology appeared to his co-workers like a sudden jump. Others have accused him of leaping irrationally from one area of exploration to another without reference to any unitary organizing principle. These leaps are usually described as beginning in his "sane" days as a psychoanalyst, then progressing into the "wild blue yonder" of sex-economy and orgone radiation. This gross misunderstanding plays out today in the advice given to psychiatric residents to study Reich's Character Analysis carefully, but not to bother reading Part III: "From Psychoanalysis to Orgone Biophysics."
In contrast, those who have read Reich's writings and studied seriously the progression of his thought realize that, in his words, "One problem and its solution led to another. Every part of the work owes its existence to the peculiar course of scientific logic." In short, there is a common thread running throughout all of Reich's investigations to which each apparently disparatediscovery can ultimately be related.
The summer conference at Orgonon will explore this common thread as it is presented in Reich's seminal work The Function of the Orgasm. This book, which traces the development of his new field of science from its origins in a Seminar for Sexology at the University of Vienna Medical School to the experimental validation of the orgasm theory, will be discussed from a variety of perspectives. All registrants are urged to read the book in preparation for active participation in discussions which will constitute an important part of each day's program.
Program Speakers
Kenneth J. Baker, D.O, Family physician, Norridgewock, Maine. An appreciation for Reich's work stems from Dr. Baker's interest in parenting and preventive mental health.
Mary DeJoseph, D.O., Clinical Advisor, Biomedical Masters Program, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. DeJoseph's interest in Reich's work originated in a study of the role of the autonomic nervous system in health and disease.
Mary Boyd Higgins, As Trustee of the Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust since 1959, Ms. Higgins is dedicated to preserving the truth about Reich's life and work and securing its safe transmission to future generations. She is Director, The Wilhelm Reich Museum, and co-editor of Reich's published works.
Patricia J. Middleton, M.D., has been in the full-time practice of intensive long-term psychotherapy for twenty-five years. She has studied Reich's work episodically throughout that time.
